Arthur Goldstone, retailer
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, June 24, 2002
HERMITAGE, Pa. — Arthur Goldstone, who guided the growth of retailer Goldsteins Furniture in western Pennsylvania for more than four decades, has died. He was 69.
Goldstone and his brother, Mike, took over the family store in Sharon, Pa., in the mid-1950s. They inherited the business from their maternal grandfather, Myer Nathan Goldstein, who founded Goldsteins in 1906.
The brothers opened more stores and expanded and relocated them over the years, including a move of the Sharon store to a larger space in nearby Hermitage. Today, the company operates three stores. Mike Goldstone died in 1995.
Arthur Goldstone was known for his loyalty to those he worked with. During the region's economic struggles in the 1980s, he didn't cash his paychecks so he could be sure that employees, vendors and banks would be paid. He also served on the boards of local volunteer and civic groups.
He turned over the daily operation of the business to his son, Steven, in 2000 but remained chairman. He also is survived by two daughters.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Shenango Valley Foundation, 39 Chestnut St., Sharon, Pa. 16146.
