La-Z-Boy to close Bauhaus upholstered furniture plant

Production will shift to nearby factory in Mississippi

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 4, 2008

MONROE, Mich. — La-Z-Boy has announced that it will close its Bauhaus USA upholstery plant in Sherman, Miss., early next year and eliminate about 150 jobs.

The company said production will be shifted to the Bauhaus plant in nearby Saltillo, Miss.

"Our order levels have decreased significantly over the past couple of months, and it is necessary to right-size our production capacity," said Bauhaus USA President Al Wiygul. "We regret the impact the closure will have on the lives of the employees working in the Sherman operation."

La-Z-Boy said the 280,000-square-foot plant will close on Feb. 7. The company will attempt to sell the facility.

Separately, The Roanoke Times reported that furniture frame supplier Frank Chervan Inc. will significantly reduce production at its plant in Bedford, Va. The company makes hardwood frames for wood and upholstered seating.
