Canada's North End closes all eight stores
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, December 21, 2008
WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The North End Furniture Co., one of this city's oldest furniture retailers, has been forced into bankruptcy by its banker, HSBC Bank Canada, according to documents filed with the Court of Queen's Bench here.
All eight of its stores — four here and another four in Calgary, Alberta — are closed. Two of the Calgary stores closed earlier this year.
Owned by Larry and Daniel Adelman, the 80-year-old family business operated stores under banners including Penthouse Furniture, Great Rooms by Palliser, Leather Express, Furniture Galleria and Thomasville.
The court named Deloitte & Touche as the interim receiver.
According to a report in the Winnipeg Free Press, the Adelmans told their staff on Dec. 13 that they were out of work and would not receive any salaries, commissions or severance pay that could be due to them. The owners have not issued any public statement since the closings, however.
Some consumers, meanwhile, are claiming they have not received furniture that they have paid for or put a deposit on. Complaints have been filed with the Manitoba Consumers' Bureau and the Winnipeg Police Service.
