EPA holding meetings on formaldehyde use
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2009
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold five half-day meetings this month to gather stakeholder comments on the issue of formaldehyde use in pressed wood products.
Last year, the EPA declined a petition by the Sierra Club requesting that California's formaldehyde emissions rule become a national standard.
However, the EPA said it would start looking at developing a national formaldehyde standard in the fall of 2009. It plans to issue an advance notice of proposed rulemaking, the first stage in the process.
In a Dec. 3 filing, the agency said it is aiming to get a better understanding of control technologies and approaches, current and future industry practices, and implementation issues related to the California Air Resources Board's formaldehyde regulation for composite wood panel.
The meetings will take place in these locations:
-
Research Triangle Park, N.C., on Jan. 8, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m, at the Environmental Protection Agency, Main Campus Auditorium (C111B/C), 109 TW Alexander Drive.
-
Portland, Ore., on Jan. 13, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m, at the State Public Health Building, 800 N.E. Oregon St., Room 1B.
