Ashley HomeStore names Disa CEO, Spang president
By Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2009
ARCADIA, Wis. — John Disa, former president and CEO of retailer Wickes Furniture, has been hired as president of the Ashley Furniture HomeStore division of Ashley Furniture.
He replaces Chuck Spang, who remains with Ashley in a new role as president of Ashley Furniture HomeStore licensing, business development and property management.
Ashley CEO Todd Wanek cited the growth of the HomeStore program as the key reason for the decision to restructure responsibilities at the division.
“Chuck Spang has done a fabulous job the past 10 years when Ashley experienced tremendous growth,” he said.
Ashley Furniture HomeStores was No. 1 on Furniture/Today's Top 100 last year, ending 2007 with 353 stores and an estimated $2.47 billion in furniture, bedding and accessories sales. There are now 390 stores.
Wanek said the company is excited to have Disa on board and enjoyed working with him during his years at Wickes.
“He brings a wealth of knowledge of the furniture industry, has a strong financial background in addition to his exceptional leadership skills, and will be a tremendous asset to the Ashley Furniture HomeStore division,” said Wanek.
Disa, who reports to Wanek, joined Wickes in 2004. The Top 100 company, with stores in greater Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., and Las Vegas, filed for bankruptcy in February 2008 and subsequently shut down.
Disa got his start in the retail and furniture industry in 1978 as a senior staff accountant for Buxton Leather Products. Before joining Wickes, he held executive posts at retailers Petite Sophisticate, Casual Corner Group, Foot Locker Worldwide and Lady/Kids Foot Locker, where he was chief operating officer.
Disa will work out of Ashley's Arcadia, Wis., headquarters for several months and then be based out of its corporate office in Brandon, Fla.
