WASHINGTON — Ikea is embracing change this week, unveiling its contemporary take on the Oval Office for all D.C. commuters to see.
The Swedish home furnishings giant built a replica of the president's White House office - complete with mock Secret Service protection - in Union Station.
Flanking the president's chair are the American flag and the blue-and-yellow Ikea flag. The display is just in time for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama and is part of Ikea's "Embrace Change '09" campaign. Today, Ikea will send a mock motorcade (a limo and two Suburbans with furniture strapped to the roof) moving through the Washington area.
The retailer also is offering to redesign and furnish any rooms in the White House for the First Family using Ikea furniture, accessories and designers - free of charge, of course.
On Friday, visitors to Ikea's embracechange09.com Web site can design their own version of the Oval Office for a chance to win $1,500 Ikea gift cards.
