MADISON, Conn. — Clayton C. Earle Jr., a longtime sales representative for companies including North Hickory Upholstery and Thomasville Furniture, has died. He was 79.
Earle served in World War II, then came home and worked for his father and grandfather, also both named Clayton Earle, at the family's upholstered furniture manufacturing company, Gardner Upholstery of Gardner, Mass.
The company closed in 1950, and Earle worked as a furniture sales representative before rejoining the service for duty in Korea. After that war, he was a representative for Kelly Bros. and Cushman Furniture.
Later, he represented Thomasville in Connecticut, Rhode Island and western Massachusetts, and then North Hickory Upholstery. He retired about five years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Ann, a retired store manager for Hitchcock Furniture in Connecticut; his son, James G. Earle, a sales representative for Lexington in the Philadelphia area; and two granddaughters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Madison Congregational Church, 1271 Durham Road, Madison, Conn. 06443.
