Classic Gallery launches high-end eXI Designs

By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002

Classic Gallery, a maker of medium- to upper-priced upholstery and tables, has launched a new company targeting high-end contemporary designer showrooms and retailers.

Called eXl Designs and pronounced like the work "excel," the company is headed by industry veteran Maxie W. Doby, formerly vice president of product development for Classic Gallery Group.

The company is introducing a line of sofas, sectionals, chairs and chaises in leathers, Ultrasuede, chenilles and leathers at this market. The showroom is at 115 S. Hamilton St.

"We've been prototyping since November," said Doby, who is president.

Introductions include nine sectionals, a crescent sofa with upholstered or chrome legs, barrel chairs, and a chaise in pink and black Ultrasuede with a retail price point of $2,030.

A swivel chair with Ultrasuede cover in cheetah-patterned back and seat and curved linear arms will retail for about $1,399.

eXl, with a capital "X," is designed to appeal to young, affluent post-baby boomers. The company has enlisted the help of designers Carlos DiMaggio, Carlos Fernandez, Good and Charlton, and Glen Morgan for its lineup.

"We keep hearing that contemporary is a knockoff of this one and that one," said Doby, noting that eXl wants to deliver original designs.

Doby said eXl is establishing a U.S. sales force and has begun building inventory in anticipation of market sales.

The company has a full-page ad in the current issue of Architectural Digest and has established its own Web site, www.exldesigns.com.
