Shechtman helping Thailand target U.S. market
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002
CHICAGO — Furniture industry consultant Barry Shechtman has been retained by the Thai government as a consultant to its furniture industry.
A year ago, Shechtman presented a series of seminars in Bangkok and Chiengmai, Thailand, on competing globally and selling into the U.S. market. As a follow-up, the Thai government wants Shechtman to work with a select group of Thai furniture producers for the next 12 months in order to boost sales into the United States, according to Shechtman.
"The powerful combination of vast natural resources (and) a well-trained and competitive labor force makes the Thai furniture sector a formidable ally for any aggressive, growth-oriented American retailer," he said.
Shechtman first will interview and research 50 of Thailand's largest furniture and accessory producers, companies identified by the consultant and the Thai Department of Export Promotion as most qualified to export to the United States. Finalists in product categories that include ready-to-assemble, outdoor and office furniture and decorative accessories will be selected for assistance.
The effort will be featured on Thai public television's Newsline news program later this year, according to Shechtman, who is based here.
The Shechtman Marketing and Consulting Group specializes in furniture product representation and marketing services. The Thai venture is part of the company's efforts to expand its international presence and expertise, Shechtman said.
