Unifi, American Fibers team up for better yarns

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002

GREENSBORO, N.C. — An agreement between fiber and yarn sources Unifi and American Fibers and Yarns should significantly increase the amount of high-quality, false twist, textured polypropylene available to the upholstery market.

American plans to supply Unifi with polypropylene feeder yarn, which Unifi will texturize and return to American for sale and distribution to the home furnishings and contract upholstery markets.

Unifi said the agreement supports its strategy of maintaining a broad and deep product line for a diverse customer base. Alf Webster, president of Unifi North America, said the agreement "provides us with expanded access to a high-growth fiber category with limited capital infusion."

Mike Apperson, president of American Fiber and Yarns, said the partnership "combines the technology, knowledge and experience of both companies.... We believe we can provide our customers with a competitive advantage as a result of this agreement."
