Canadel boosting capacity

LOUISEVILLE, Quebec — Casual dining powerhouse Canadel Furniture is building a 100,000-square-foot factory here and adding 30,000 square feet to its warehouse, spending about C$6 million.
Jean Deveault, vice president of sales and marketing, said the warehouse will be operational by mid-June and the production facility online by Oct. 1.
The project will bring total warehouse space to 80,000 square feet, all devoted to cross-docking operations. "We never produce inventory, only sold orders," Deveault said. "We'll use this space just to load the trucks."
He said the new plant, separate from the existing facility here, will increase Canadel's capacity by between C$15 million and C$20 million annually.
"In 2003, we will have nearly C$150 million in annual production capacity," Deveault said. "Our total square footage for assembling, finishing and packaging will be close to 700,000 square feet once the new building is finished. If you add the square footage of our suppliers, most of whom are totally devoted to our production needs, we have over 1 million square feet of production space."
Canadel employs over a thousand people at plants here and in nearby St-Georges, and Deveault anticipates hiring an additional 100 or so production employees within the next 12 months.
