Century plant celebrates safety record
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002
HICKORY, N.C. — As of January, the Century Furniture chair plant here had logged more than 500,000 hours without a lost-time accident.
Plant Manager Kevin Boyle said that safety record is achieved by fewer than 5% of wood furniture factories nationwide.
"Everyone who works at this plant is responsible for this achievement, but much of the credit goes to Fran King, our nurse," he said. "She has put the focus on prevention, plant cleanliness and corrective action."
King attributed the success to such things as monthly inspections and employees taking personal responsibility.
"We have a great safety team that works together to make our plant as safe as we can make it," said King. "Each employee is responsible for reporting any hazards immediately and the safety committee reviews and acts effectively and efficiently on those concerns."
A celebration was held in early February and awards given to members of the safety committee, including King, Rob Hobek, Mike Webb, Lisa Nicholson, Jim Phillips, William Miller, Pete Solomon, Melissa Byles, Dorothy Shurford, Sheila Sizemore and Willie McDaniel.
