Thomasville giving consumers close-up views on Web site
By Brian Carroll -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2002
THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Furniture is adopting a new online imaging technology that allows consumers to view its home furnishings and its subcontracted cabinetry on the Web with an unprecedented degree of detail.
The ZoomView technology from Viewpoint lets consumers see first-rate graphics of furniture and cabinetry even with narrowband Internet connections.
Thomasville is among the first in home furnishings to use the new digital technology, according to Viewpoint, a photography and imaging company serving the industry.
The addition of ZoomView is part of Thomasville's larger initiative to upgrade its Internet presence for improved consumer convenience and service.
Thomasville is introducing the technology on its Thomasville Cabinetry site, which showcases its semi-custom cabinetry available exclusively through Home Depot.
Site visitors can browse the variety of kitchen, bath, home office and home entertainment cabinetry styles. ZoomView enables them to drill deep into an image in order to see molding detail, wood grain, and accents such as glass doors and decorative hardware.
Traditional JPEG images don't support this kind of application.
"For those who enjoy the convenience of shopping online, Viewpoint provides crisp, detailed images, giving our customers the truest virtual vision of our home furnishings," said Chris Pfaff, Thomasville president and chief executive officer.
Leslie Morgan, e-business manager for Thomasville, said the technology gives consumers "a significantly more productive browsing experience."
From a technological standpoint, according to Chris Robin, director of strategic relationships at Viewpoint, the advance is in repurposing existing high-resolution digital images on the Internet in a meaningful way.
