Consumer furniture spending flat in 2001

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 17, 2002

Consumer spending on furniture and bedding in 2001 was flat, while overall consumer outlays increased 5% over 2000.

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that retail sales of furniture, including bedding, were $64.101 billion last year, compared with $64.102 billion in 2000. 1999 sales of furniture were $59.99 billion.

Total consumer spending increased to $7.1 trillion from $6.7 trillion in 2000, and $6.3 trillion in 1999.

Furniture is part of the larger category of furniture and household equipment. Sales for that group were $310.3 billion, up 1% from 2000. Along with furniture, the category includes kitchen and other household appliances, consumer electronics, china and glassware and other durable household furnishings, such as floor coverings, clocks, lamps and hand tools.

Household appliance sales were up 1.9% in 2001, consumer electronics grew 2.4% and other durable house furnishings increased 2.3%.

All sales figures for 2001 are preliminary, the Commerce Department said, and will be revised as additional information is available. Figures are in current dollars, which are not adjusted for inflation.
