Suspect still sought in Singapore market death

By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, March 17, 2002

Authorities still are seeking a man accused in the death of a Dutch exhibitor at the International Furniture Fair here earlier this month.

Reports said the unidentified man left the show after scuffling with Leonardus Franciscus Maria Van der Storm over the design of a chair. Van der Storm, 48, fell to the floor in his space, hit his head on a table base and was knocked unconscious. He died later in a nearby hospital without regaining consciousness. Van der Storm was exhibiting products from his family-owned outdoor furniture company, Alu-Light Products.

Gerard Ong, a show spokesman, said the suspect walked away before security people arrived. "We are unsure of his nationality but he is not a local," Ong said. Earlier, reports indicated the suspect was Dutch.

The Straits Times in Singapore reported that a witness said the suspect came to the Alu-Light booth and complained the design of the chair copied one offered by his company. Even as Van der Storm lay on the floor unconscious, the suspect demanded the chair be removed from the space, the witness was reported as saying.

"This unfortunate incident happened so fast that Mr. Van der Storm's colleagues were surprised," said Ong. "They thought it was a business argument and nothing more. No weapons were used by either party. The police are investigating the matter and Interpol has been alerted to look out for the assailant."
