Tourney, Oct. markets to conflict

GREENSBORO , N.C. — A change in dates of the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic golf tourney will put the PGA tour stop in conflict with the October furniture markets in 2003 and 2004.
GGCC officials said last week the event will begin on Oct. 16 in 2003 and Oct. 14 in 2004. Both are official opening days of the furniture market. Dates in 2005 and 2006 do not conflict.
Market Authority President Judy Mendenhall doesn't think the golf event will have much of an impact on the market. "Many hotels have long-standing relationships with market people, and I'm sure they will get preferential treatment," she said.
While the tournament attracts thousands of people to the Forest Oaks Country Club southeast of Greensboro, most are day-trippers and won't require accommodations, Mendenhall said.
While she doesn't expect any problems with accommodations, market visitors may experience additional crowding at restaurants. "Obviously, the restaurant people will reap the benefits of the two events," she said.
