Staack named CEO at AMC
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 17, 2002
DURHAM, N.C. — Craig Staack, a veteran furniture retailing executive who spent most of his career with Montgomery Ward, has been named president and chief executive officer of bedding specialist American Mattress Centers, which operates leased mattress departments in nearly 100 Wal-Mart stores.
He most recently was an executive with now-defunct HomeLife Furniture, but worked for Wards from 1977 to 1997 and again from 1998-2001, becoming vice president of furniture.
Staack said AMC has departments in 97 Wal-Mart supercenter stores, most in the Southeast and Midwest. All have opened in the past year, and he plans to slow the pace of openings for the next several months while firming up AMC's infrastructure.
All AMC locations carry Sealy as the only national brand. Most display eight to 12 sleep sets, including some private-label models.
Staack said he is an investor in AMC, but that other investors have asked not to be identified. Former AMC President Mike Matsinger is still with the company and reports to him, Staack said.
