Boyd Furniture signs up for space in Las Vegas

POMONA, Calif. — Case goods manufacturer Boyd Furniture plans to show at the proposed market in Las Vegas, signing a lease for a 15,000-square-foot space at the World Market Center, said President Robert Clark.
Boyd didn't take part in the San Francisco market in January, the first time it hasn't shown there in 21 years. The company is familiar with Las Vegas since its contract segment sells to hotels there, Clark said.
Coming this spring is an imported, high-end, solid-wood bedroom group. Clark said the group may not be ready for the April market, but he expects it to do well with or without market exposure. Boyd has a 1 million-square-foot plant here, but has been adding imports to the line.
At the April market, Boyd will show two new domestic bedrooms, one with a look suitable for Pottery Barn, a retailer it has supplied for years, the other with a Pennsylvania Dutch look, Clark said.
Boyd shows in High Point on the second floor of the Braxton Culler building.
Clark said Boyd's residential sales were down last year from 2000, partly due to the demise of Heilig-Meyers. But sales have picked up in the past few months, and the company paid off its capital debts in December, he said. Also, half of Boyd's business is in contract sales, which haven't been as affected as residential, he said.
Boyd is in no hurry to fill the national sales manager post left vacant when Greg Beckman left to join Martin, Clark said.
