Bay building sixth and largest Chicago-area store
By Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, April 7, 2002
MOKENA, Ill. — Bay Furniture is building its sixth and largest Chicagoland store here.
The 45,000-square-foot unit in this developing community southwest of the city is the first new one since 1999 for the Top 100 contender, whose previous units have had 30,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet of display.
"Actually, we're concerned it might be too small," said Larry Slovy, vice president of the family-owned firm. "That market out there is so big, and it's growing."
Bay Furniture will own the building, sited amid a future shopping center that will feature flooring, lighting and other home furnishings specialists. Assuming that construction follows plan, the grand opening will be held this fall, Slovy said.
Mokena is just a few miles down the road from Orland Park, where a furniture center has built up around Darvin Furniture's Top 100 superstore.
Bay Furniture's Mokena store will feature Kincaid and Berkline galleries as well as a gallery of bestsellers.
While the building project is proceeding, Bay also will be sprucing up existing stores. Last year, the company, which is based in Homewood, updated its Hoffman Estates store and enjoyed a 40% sales gain. The company has hired a manager responsible for designing and maintaining displays throughout the chain.
Last year, Bay was one of the largest furniture retailers that missed making Furniture/Today's list of Top 100 furniture stores. The company had 2000 sales of $47.6 million. It hasn't released its 2001 sales figures.
