Magnussen breaks ground on Calif. distribution center

By Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, April 7, 2002

Case goods and occasional importer Magnussen Presidential has broken ground on a $14 million, 400,000-square-foot distribution center here.

The facility, expected to be completed by July, will be a cross-dock warehouse with 104 shipping docks, a driver's lounge and showers. It will replace the 133,000 square feet of distribution space Magnussen now has in Southern California.

Magnussen will almost quadruple its distribution work force with the new center, which eventually will employ 80 to 100 people. The Riverside site is large enough to allow addition of another 250,000 square feet.

The company chose Riverside for its convenience; most product is made in Mexico and the Far East.

"We are able to deliver orders on a weekly basis anywhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico in four to seven days," said Jeff Cook, president of Magnussen Presidential.

The debut of bedroom in High Point last October and the continued growth of its occasional line have doubled business since 1999, Cook said. He said January 2002 sales were up 44% over a year ago.

"The new bedroom division has substantially increased our required inventory, as has the significant growth in our core business," he said. "Because we're committed to becoming a full-line wood resource during the next three-to-five years, we know we need a larger, state-of-the-art distribution center."
