Crate & Barrel plans 3 CB2 units for 2002
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 10, 2002
NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Crate & Barrel will open three more units this year of its CB2, the retailer's concept store for younger consumers.
Gordon Segal, founder and chief executive officer of Crate & Barrel, said CB2 also is carving out a more distinct identity as it moves beyond the test mode.
Initially, the merchandise mix for CB2 was only 15% differentiated from Crate & Barrel stores. But in the two years since the first store opened on Chicago's North Side, the differentiated mix has increased to 50% and will expand even more, Segal said.
"We've positioned furniture to be more contemporary, more fun, more unique," he added.
This year's new units are planned for the metro Chicago, New York and Boston markets, Segal said, but details for the real estate have not been finalized.
CB2's footprint, at 6,000 square feet in the original site, is geared to attract a customer in a neighborhood that is not gentrified. New stores could range up to 8,000 or 9,000 square feet.
The company also will open six Crate & Barrel home stores this year — in Arlington, Va., this month, and later in San Jose, Calif., Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York and the Chicago area.
