Theresa Castro, Castro Convertibles

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 10, 2002

Theresa Castro, widow of the founder of manufacturer-retailer Castro Convertibles, has died. She was 85.

She was the wife of Bernard Castro, who created his sofa-sleeper and founded Castro Convertible Corp. here. Mrs. Castro is credited with taking retail advertising to a new level with the use of her then-4-year-old daughter, Bernadette, in TV advertising in the New York market. For a time, "The Castro" was a catchall phrase describing any sofa-sleeper.

In the 1950s, Castro Convertibles expanded to Florida. Castro's husband died in 1991 and the company was sold to Krause's Furniture in 1993. Currently, there are 16 Castro Convertibles stores in New York and Florida.
