FurnishNet adds 16 mfrs. to e-commerce platform
By Brian Carroll -- Furniture Today, March 10, 2002
SAN DIEGO — FurnishNet has added 16 manufacturers to its platform for computer-based transactions with retailers, giving the GERS company some 180 electronic trading partners.
The furniture makers will use FurnishNet to electronically receive purchase orders and to transmit purchase order acknowledgements, advance ship notices, and invoices.
The new companies include upholstery producer Advantage Furniture, bedroom source Beauce Furniture, case goods maker Dynamic Furniture, bedding source Eastman House, metal bed specialist Elliott's Designs, recliner maker Golden Chair, upholstery producer Maple Mountain, and leather specialist New Generations.
Eight more factories have signed up but didn't want to be identified.
"This will provide us with an efficient, cost-effective way to communicate with our customers," said David Thompson, vice president of operations for New Generations. "We can avoid glitches and delays associated with faxing and improve security by transacting business over a secure connection."
The FurnishNet exchange is employing the eight XML-based e-commerce document standards approved by the Furniture Industry Data Exchange group. Geoff Mack, senior systems architect with the company, has been active in FIDX.
"The adoption rate for XML has been slow, because manufacturers and retailers are not currently set up to handle it," said Ron Sellers, FurnishNet's vice president of sales. "So while we're not currently relying on XML to be successful, we've incorporated FIDX standards to manage XML transactions as it finds a bigger audience."
The FurnishNet system integrates e-mail, Web applications, electronic data interchange, XML, and faxed-based processes into one system, translating the information into the appropriate format for exchange between business partners.
The aim is to reduce the costs and complexities associated with traditional EDI solutions.
FurnishNet said it now is facilitating $480 million in annualized purchase order volume, adding an average of $31 million per month since August 2001.
