Coaster expanding showrooms

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. — Furniture and accent importer Coaster says it is expanding its showrooms in Tupelo and High Point amid rising sales.
Coaster said it had record sales at the San Francisco and Tupelo markets this year and expects good sales in April in High Point, where it is renovating its showroom.
Charlie Nobile, vice president of sales, said Coaster's volume was up 9% last year compared with 2000 and were up an estimated 25% from a year earlier in January and February. He declined to give a dollar amount.
In High Point, the company is dramatically expanding the space it is occupying in the Coaster WrenCom building, its showroom at Commerce Avenue and Wrenn Street in High Point. A key reason is to show the company's larger product line, which has grown with the addition of more midpriced goods to its usual promotional lineup.
A few years ago, the company Coaster occupied only two floors or about 13,000 square feet of the High Point building, said Darrell Verdeck, marketing manager. Last October, it took more than 20,000 square feet, and this April, Coaster will cover all five floors and 36,000 square feet.
Coaster has gutted the interior, ripping up flooring, taking down lights and ceilings, and rewiring some areas. Nobile said Coaster is replacing those items as well as adding new dividing walls, carpet on the fire stairs and a kitchen area. He declined to say how much the company is spending on the project.
In San Francisco, Verdeck said sales at the January market were 50% higher than at any previous show there. In Tupelo, Coaster increased its space to 15,000 square feet from 9,000, and doubled its previous record sales total.
Verdeck said Coaster also has expanded most of its eight warehouses in the U.S. and Canada.
