MONTREAL — MONTREAL — Ikea Canada plans to open its second store here in early 2003, a 300,000-square-foot, C$60 million facility in the suburb of Boucherville.
The Sweden-based home furnishings giant expects to ring up sales of C$86 million in the first year from 1.5 million visitors to the store. Those figures are expected to grow to 2 million visitors and C$125 million in sales by the fifth year.
Ikea currently is ranked as Canada's second-largest furniture retailer, behind Sears Canada and ahead of major chains Leon's Furniture and The Brick.
"Our potential growth in the Montreal market is very exciting," said Laurence Martocq, corporate communications manager. "As a destination store, our current Montreal location is quickly reaching capacity. The new store will provide accessibility to shoppers from as far as Sorel, St. Hyacinthe, the Eastern Townships and, of course, the eastern side of Montreal."
Martocq estimated that 15% of the existing Montreal store's traffic will migrate to the new store in the first year.
The Boucherville store will be Ikea 10th in Canada following the opening of a second Vancouver, British Columbia, unit this April.
