INDIO, Calif. — Mathis Brothers Furniture has been throwing a Tommy Bahama event of its own here — a tropical party that takes the licensed brand to a higher level with a mix of furniture, food and apparel.
The second annual event held recently at the Mathis store in this Palm Desert community east of Los Angeles drew well over 500 people as the retailer teamed up with a nearby Tommy Bahama restaurant and retail shop to create the tropical environment, said Doug Waggoner, vice president of the Oklahoma City-based Top 100 company.
Five food and beverage stations were set up throughout the stores in tiki hut fashion, offering rum punch and tropical appetizers. Other features included a steel drum brand, tiki torches and palm trees at the store entrance, Tommy Bahama apparel displayed through the store and a series of giveaways to registering consumers. Lexington Home brands supported the event, providing invitations that went out to key customers as well as through giveaway items including a Tommy Bahama armoire.
The store also received a visit from former N.Y. Yankees baseball star Bobby Mercer, though the big star of the event was the Tommy Bahama furniture line. Waggoner said Lexington's Tommy Bahama has been on display at the front of the store since the day it came in, and "it's just the No. 1 collection month after month."
