Madison Square wins Monticello license

By Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2002

High-end case goods and occasional manufacturer Madison Square Furniture has been licensed by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation to produce the Monticello Collection by Madison Square.

The 30-piece collection will debut at the October High Point market. The collection will offer direct reproductions, adaptations and pieces styled after architectural themes and furniture found in Monticello, the Charlottesville, Va., estate of founding father Jefferson.

Pieces will range from formal dining room to specialty occasional furniture such as etageres, writing desks, bookcases and tables. The mix of adaptations and reproductions is designed to balance the collection for retail salability and tofit current consumer lifestyles.

"Our intention is to incorporate the design brilliance of Monticello into extraordinary pieces of furniture. We want to create furnishings that all Americans will be proud to own," said Michael Peterson, president of Madison Square.

Susan Stein, curator of Monticello, said the estate will "make available not only reproductions of some of Monticello's most interesting pieces of furniture but also interpretations that characterize Jefferson's taste."

Madison Square looks to come to the October market with evidence of the Monticello Collection's potential at retail.

"Many of the pieces have been prototyped and manufactured," Peterson said. "They will be presold through the Monticello Catalog before being offered at the October market. In this way, we will help determine salability and/or potential improvements for the pieces long before they are presented to retailers."

Madison Square, a 100% domestic manufacturer, will make the Monticello Collection itself.

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, a private, non-profit organization, operates Monticello. The foundation's mission is to preserve the estate, and to educate the public about Monticello and Jefferson's life and work.
