High Point hotel rates listed

By Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, February 18, 2002

The International Home Furnishings Market Authority has a revamped Web site that features, among other things, a listing of more than 100 area hotels and motels offering rooms to marketgoers.

The hotel listings don't include recommendations from the market's sponsoring organization, but the site, www.highpointmarket.org, does list the nightly rates each property charges during market.

The authority, which has received numerous complaints from market attendees about price gouging by hotels, restaurants and car rental companies, has debated the merits of some type of rating system or "seal of approval" for hotels, but opted to unveil the new Web site without such a system.

"Since everybody can see what the competition is charging, I think the pricing issue will take care of itself," said Market Authority President Judy Mendenhall.

The site last week showed 107 hotels and motels with nightly rates ranging from $40.99 to $295. Seven had rates under $75 per night, 40 were charging $75 to $124 per night and 34 were at $125 to $174 per night. Another 26 had rates in excess of $175.

The two most expensive at $295 per night are the Radisson Hotel in High Point and the Grandover Hotel in Greensboro. The Radisson is the closest hotel to most market buildings, while the Grandover is a luxury resort featuring amenities such as two golf courses and a spa.

The IHFMA site also is offering a "Later 4 Less" promotion aimed at encouraging buyers to shop during the second half of market. The nine participating properties are offering rooms for $100 per night, including a hotel shuttle ticket, for those arriving on or after Sunday, April 21.
