Between 1990 and 2000, the number of Asian Americans (including those who said they were Asian and some other race) increased faster than the number of Hispanics.
There were 10.2 million who indicated that they were only Asian, a 48.3% increase since 1990. If we add in those who said they were Asian with some other race, the number reaches 11.9 million, a 72.2% increase in the 10 years since the last census. Current population projections, scheduled to be updated later this year, call for another 35% increase in the Asian/Pacific Islander population by 2010.
As with Hispanics, a large number of Asian Americans are foreign-born — almost 60% according to immigration records. Also like Hispanics, Asian Americans have started to spread beyond their traditional geographic base on the West Coast. However, more than a third, 36%, of Asian Americans still live in California. Of the 33 metropolitan areas where more than 10% of the child population is Asian-alone, only nine are not in California.
Unlike the Hispanic market, there is no commonality of language or religion among the 16 Asian subgroups identified by the census. While those who have backgrounds in China and in the Philippines still make up the larger portion of the Asian American population, the fastest-growing group are people with backgrounds in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other parts of the South Asian subcontinent. Their numbers, still small, have more than doubled since 1990, by 863,000.
