Globiz makes market debut distributing for Segusino

By Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, April 28, 2002

Globiz, a logistics, trading and consulting company based here, showed at the High Point market for the first time as the exclusive U.S. distributor for Mexican-based case goods manufacturer Segusino.

Gerardo Gomez, formerly Segusino's general manager, has joined Globiz to run its trading division, which handles Segusino distribution.

"It was important for us for Gerardo to stay, since our background is not in furniture, and it was important to Segusino for him to head distribution here since people know him," said Hernan Trillas, a Globiz partner.

Segusino had taken over its North American distribution two years ago when it bought its then-wholesaler, New Jersey-based Marina's. Segusino was unfamiliar with distribution issues outside Mexico and problems arose last year when a drop in demand put financial strains on the company.

Globiz is the U.S. trading partner for the Mexican Trade Center, which develops Mexican companies' capabilities to do business in the United States. Along with logistics and warehousing, Globiz can provide office space in Dallas.

Segusino has 100,000 square feet of warehouse space to grow into.

"We're loading up a big stock to service non-container customers," Gomez said. "We're looking to offer four- to six-week delivery from Dallas, containers in five to six weeks. The last three months under the old system we were averaging 10 to 12 weeks."

Globiz is looking to develop distribution for other qualified Mexican manufacturers, and can provide working capital to support manufacturing.

"We want to be sure we can deliver on time and have the necessary quality," said John Williams, a partner in Globiz. "We have people in the plant to make sure things are going smoothly."

Globiz will pick and choose from furniture companies meeting its capacity and quality requirements. By next High Point market, Globiz expects to have two or three lines from other factories and is looking to expand its services into Chile.

Starting with Segusino, Globiz will look to streamline distribution of Mexican furniture in the United States. Gerardo Gomez, left, Hernan Trillas and John Williams are leading the effort.
