Comfort Furniture veterans form upholstery producer
By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, April 28, 2002
TUPELO, Miss. — A group of former Comfort Furniture executives have launched New Look Second Generation, a maker of midpriced upholstery and recliners.
The executives are Mark Nanney, president of New Look; Jim Tackett, vice president of sales; Craig Wedel, vice president and secretary/treasurer; and Eddie Harper, vice president of production. The four have worked together for 20 years, and left Comfort after the company was sold last year to United Furniture Inds.
They formed New Look, which has 35 to 40 employees in a 60,000-square-foot plant south of Tupelo, last year, but because of the Sept. 11 attacks delayed introducing product until the Tupelo market in February.
The company rolled out nine frames there, including three in leather match, to retail for $599 to $999. Two groups were added at the April market as well as recliners starting at $299 retail.
Tackett said sales have been good. He said New Look is targeting mom-and-pop operations with two or three stores, but also would like to serve larger retailers and rent-to-own companies.
"We think our growth and window of opportunity is calling on (smaller) dealers and making multiple drops on our truck, not just truckloads," Tackett said. "We want to grow at a moderate pace and keep the quality and integrity of our frames."
