Factory orders up 2% in January
BDO says mixed results point to unstable recovery
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 24, 2002
HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — Furniture factory orders in January were 2% higher than a year ago, the second straight monthly increase, but still haven't rebounded to the 2000 level, according to BDO Seidman's latest estimate.
Shipments in January were down about 2% from the same month a year earlier, the accounting and consulting firm said.
Results among companies participating in BDO's monthly survey were mixed. Slightly more than 40% of the companies reported a decline in orders, with many down 10% or more. The good news is that almost 40% of participants reported increases of 10% or more.
Shipments were down for slightly over two-thirds of those surveyed and up for one-third. Nearly half reported declines of 10% or more, and one in five saw shipments grow 10% or more.
"As with the economy in general, the furniture industry has not yet stabilized," said Ken Smith, national director of BDO's Furniture Industry Services, in the firm's monthly Furniture Insights newsletter.
"Upholstery seems to be doing better overall than case goods, but that is not true throughout. The loss of certain significant retailers in 2000 and 2001 severely impacted many companies," he said.
