Powell consolidates distribution to N.C. site

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, February 3, 2002

Furniture and accents importer Powell Co. has leased 300,000 square feet for a distribution center in Greensboro, N.C., and will phase out centers in Los Angeles, Dallas and Baltimore.

Jerry Ruff, chief executive officer, said the Greensboro center, in a former Sears warehouse, is already receiving inventory and will begin full-fledged operations in March. The other facilities will close by the end of summer.

"Our line has grown dramatically over the last few years, and we have had difficulty keeping everything in stock in all the warehouses," said Ruff. "The consolidation of our inventories into one warehouse will allow us to have a much better stock position on each item.

"The result will be a much higher level of service for our customers. Not only will we be able to ship faster and more complete, we will be driving costs out of our distribution system."

To continue serving West Coast customers in a timely manner, Powell will have a cross-docking operation in Los Angeles, he said.

Ruff likes the fact that the new distribution center is less than 20 miles from the company's High Point market showroom in the National Furniture Mart.

Powell's headquarters will remain here in Culver City. The Greensboro operation has a management team in place, he said, but doesn't include any of the top company executives.

The new center initially will employ about 30 people, and may add more after the other facilities are phased out. There is space available for Powell to double the size of the Greensboro facility if necessary, Ruff said.
