AFMA plans imports seminar March 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. — An American Furniture Manufacturers Assn. seminar here March 1 will take an in-depth look at "The Impact of Imports on the Furniture Industry."

Among the speakers is John D. Bassett III, president and chief executive officer of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture in Galax, Va., who will discuss Vaughan-Bassett's determination to remain a strong domestic producer in spite of rising imports.

The day-long seminar, presented by AFMA's Purchasing and Materials Management Division, also will feature these topics:

• "Working With the Chinese — An Inside Look," by industry consultant Lee Houston.

• "Touring China and Its Manufacturing Plants," by Andy Santulli, director of manufacturing services and technology, LifeStyle Furnishings International.

• "The Changes That Globalization Has Brought on the American Hosiery Industry," by Sid Smith, former president and CEO, The Hosiery Assn.

• Panel discussion on imports with Jeb Bassett, vice president of international procurement, Bassett Furniture; Norman Coley, vice president, Lee Inds.; Rad Darby, senior vice president, Akzo Nobel Coatings; and Andy Gfesser, president, Trendler Components.

• "Life's Choices and Changes," by professional speaker Laura Hamilton.
