Breuners consolidating Wayside, Huffman Koos
By Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, February 3, 2002
LANCASTER, Pa. — Breuners Home Furnishings Corp. is merging its six Wayside Furniture stores into its Huffman Koos chain in a cost-cutting and brand-building move.
The Wayside name will change to Huffman Koos, but neither suppliers nor consumers will notice a difference, said Joe Reddington, chairman and chief executive officer of 48-store BHFC, which operates Huffman Koos, Wayside and Good's Furniture in the Northeast and Breuners on the West Coast.
The Wayside stores are in Mount Kisco, N.Y., and Milford, Stamford, Old Saybrook, Manchester and Berlin, Conn. The name will change in about three weeks.
Reddington expects an easy conversion, noting that both store names are familiar to Wayside customers.
He said BHFC had been moving the Huffman Koos and Wayside merchandise assortment closer together for some time, adding the biggest advantages to operating under one name will be advertising savings and strengthening the company's marketing position.
Reddington wouldn't disclose the company's sales in the region or how much money will be saved.
Mary Hill will continue to be the division vice president over the now 18-store Huffman Koos. Paul Babbage, former store director at Wayside, will become store director over nine Huffman Koos North stores in New York and Connecticut. Ed Schavnoch will be store director over Huffman Koos South, the nine stores in New Jersey.
