Maison spirited as ever, but also conservative
Purples, toned-down oranges popular in Paris
By Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, February 3, 2002
PARIS — PARIS — It was a spirited, elegant, and idea-ful show for furniture and fabrics, but Maison & Objet here last month definitely reflected a more conservative point of view compared with several of its more recent editions.
The color palette, which had been influenced by citrus shades and retro acids, was noticeably stepped down — but still intense, saturated and exuberant. Orange continued its run as a fashion favorite, but in a toned-down version, and purples were seen in a wide variety.
In contrast, some of the most fashionable looks in furniture were covered in simple white or cream-colored cotton canvas, mixed with ticking stripes to offer a fresh look.
Maison & Objet is not a furniture show featuring suites and complete grouping, instead focusing more on pieces or limited coordinates. Within this context, there was more focus on pieces for the bedroom, from benches covered in leather or luxury fabrics to elegant case pieces that could dress up a bedroom or be used throughout the home.
Wenge continued as a wood favorite, but lighter finishes and painted, decorated finishes are beginning a comeback.
Novelty furniture pieces, a Maison & Objet signature, ran the gamut from wicker sedan chairs to puzzle pieces that fit together for seating, to seating utilizing high-tech materials for shape and design.
