Assembly system for seating debuts
Method cuts shipping costs
By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, February 2, 2009
TUPELO, Miss. — A new upholstery assembly system was launched at the Tupelo furniture market here last week designed to improve both manufacturing and delivery processes.
The system, which recently secured its third patent, was developed by longtime furniture maker and inventor Larry Owens of Booneville, Miss., and will be marketed by Mobilis System, based in Tupelo.
The system is targeted at manufacturers, who could use it to simplify the production process and cut shipping costs by decreasing the volume of carton sizes.
The company said the system allows the sub-assembly of a sofa's components into arms, back and seat box that can be nested into a flat package that allows more units to be placed into a truck or container.
No tools are required for assembly, and the company said the system is simple and strong (no racking of arms), and allows most sofas to be delivered by one person.
An unassembled sofa also would be a benefit to urban dwellers who need to maneuver furniture in small places.
The product was demonstrated to prospective users here last week by former Lane and BenchCraft executive Dwight Hardison, who will lead the marketing effort for Mobilis.
“While the furniture industry is being battered by the global recession, the ingenuity revealed in Larry Owens' bold invention demonstrates that the furniture industry in north Mississippi is not yet dead, but full of much promise if it can add exciting cost-saving, sales- driving innovations to an otherwise flat or sagging revenue picture and product set,” said Mobilis President Brad Prewitt about the new system.
