Marshall Mattress patents spring production process
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, March 3, 2002
TORONTO — TORONTO — Marshall Mattress here has been granted a U.S. patent on the process it uses to construct its pocket spring bedding line.
"Since 1900, when James Marshall was issued a Canadian patent for the design of the first pocket spring mattress construction, we have been working towards expanding the patent to include the total process," said Brad Warner, managing partner of Marshall Mattress.
He said the company is planning to license its manufacturing process to producers in the United States.
The patent recognizes Marshall's system of inner sleep coils and stronger edge coils, both formed from Marshall springs. The system is standard on all Marshall Mattress lines for home, hospital or hotel use. Marshall makes the line at its factory in Toronto.
The privately held Toronto bedding specialist's largest customer is The Bay, which markets the line under the Tudor Crown label. Marshall Mattress has a number of U.S. retail accounts, including Factory Sleep Shop of Buffalo, N.Y. Suggested retails for a queen-size mattress using the system range from C$1,099 to C$2,799.
Warner noted that several bedding producers, including Simmons, make various wrapped spring constructions, but he believes that only Marshall has been able to patent the entire process.
"We are pursuing patents in Canada and the European Common Market," he said.
