Youth bedroom generates sales

TUPELO , Miss. — Strong traffic at the Tupelo Furniture Market led to good sales in youth furniture, manufacturers said.
At Good Cos., the hot youth products were those with a feminine touch. Good returned to Tupelo after a one-market absence and set sales marks for the show, said David Preuss, executive vice president of marketing and sales.
Orders have picked up greatly over the past few months, he said. Business at January's San Francisco Market was 10% higher than any previous January market and the momentum continued in Tupelo, Preuss said. February could wind up as Good Cos.' best booking month, he added.
Standard Furniture's Kathy Ireland collection won't officially be introduced until April, but already the company is receiving orders. A few pieces were on display here.
"This is hot," said Don Mecke, Standard vice president. "Kathy Ireland is coming out of the gates a winner."
Mecke said the few products were attracting wide interest from Standard's customers, with offerings in two divisions. The Home Essentials line is a domestically made group that hits entry-level price points, while the imported Gallery line is a more upscale look. Drawing interest here was the U.S.-made Princess Bouquet group with three bed options. The panel headboard retails for $99, while the sleigh and poster beds hit $299. A student desk is $399, while a drawer chest is $199 and a dresser/mirror is $299.
Thomasville's Vignettes division also continues to grow. A year ago, Thomasville created Vignettes as an umbrella operation for step-up products from Founders Furniture and two other divisions, Creative Interiors and Thomasville Contract. Making up the division's youth line are imported groups of solid wood and veneers, according to Phil Miller, Founders vice president and general manager.
The product is a noticeable step up in quality and is more expensive than some of Founders' existing lines, he said, but the cost is kept down through the use of imports.
Under the Founders name, a hot collection is the 393 casual country girl's group, which has sold surprisingly well since its introduction in October, Miller said. The group comes with a canopy, storage or flat headboard bed. A signature piece is a mirrored chest.
Among other youth manufacturers, Colby Furniture also reported strong traffic and sales as many retailers came looking for inventory to fill their stores. Harden Mfg. added sleigh beds to two existing lines.
Delma Arredo gave its Aurora group a makeover after buyers said they liked the silhouette, but not the black accents, which were replaced with a bronze finish. The company plans to show 10 to 12 groups at the April High Point show.
