Trillium competition renamed, updated
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, March 3, 2002
Mississauga, Ontario — The Trillium Awards competition will see several changes this year in an effort to bolster support from the Canadian furniture industry.
Most noticeable will be a name change. While the trophy will still be called the Trillium, the program will be renamed the Canadian Home Furnishings Award.
Laine Reynolds, chairman of the Trillium steering committee, said the new name reflects a desire to position it as a national program. "And we won't have lost the equity we've built in the Trillium name," he said.
The Trilliums have been organized by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn. for 27 years and recognize excellence in the manufacturing, design and marketing of Canadian-made household furniture.
Reynolds, vice president of sales and marketing for upholstery maker Superstyle Furniture, said judging for the 2003 program will take place before next January's Canadian Home Furnishings Market. That should help attract more entries, he said.
"A common complaint from manufacturers who don't have permanent showrooms in Toronto is that they have nowhere to set up their entries when the judging is done in November," Reynolds said. But most prospective entrants show in Toronto and will have product ready for review at the Toronto International Center of Commerce.
Another often-heard complaint is that many manufacturers don't have new product and programs ready for judging in November.
To accommodate the anticipated increase in entries, the jury will be enlarged, perhaps to as many as 15 members from the current 10.
"We want to make the job as easy as possible for each member of the jury," Reynolds said. "We're asking them to give up some of their precious time during our unofficial premarket to judge the entries, so we have to give them all the assistance we possibly can."
The Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Assn. will include entry forms for the 2003 competition in the exhibitor kits for the January market, which are distributed in late June.
Requests for tickets to the 2003 Trillium banquet will be included in the QFMA's pre-registration kit for exhibitors and retailers.
The steering committee will review the competition's categories, some of which are subdivided by materials used, others by style.
"We are confident the 2003 Canadian Home Furnishings Awards program will be the best and the largest we've ever staged," Reynolds said. "The committee is working hard to implement the changes the industry is demanding. If we want the program to grow, we have to make it more interesting and relevant."
