McKinnon-Land venture offers FR textile products
By Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, March 3, 2002
CHARLOTTE , N.C. — Two fabric veterans have formed a company to market new textile products they say are inherently flame resistant and can meet or surpass government requirements.
Bob McKinnon, most recently president of Joan Fabrics, and Frank Land, president of Land Fabrics, call the venture McKinnon-Land LLC.
Mattress producer Jamison Bedding is using the company's technology for ticking on products it will begin shipping this week.
McKinnon-Land acquired the intellectual properties of Land Fabric as the foundation for the new company. McKinnon is chairman and chief executive officer, and Land is president and chief operating officer.
McKinnon said the new technology, called Alessandra, creates yarn that preserves the hand and ability to hold dyes that have been lacking in flame-resistant fabrics. The process requires only minimal retooling in the yarn manufacturing process, he said..
Land said the technology "builds the flame resistance directly into the yarn in contrast to most existing FR products, which utilize backcoatings or topically applied finishes."
Further developments will involve interliner barrier fabrics for both mattresses and upholstered furniture, McKinnon said.
