HOM, Spring Air donate to Sept. 11 charity

COON RAPIDS , Minn. — COON RAPIDS , Minn. — HOM Furniture and Spring Air donated $44,000 to a charity supporting victims of the Sept. 11 tragedies, capping a month-long promotion that resulted in record bedding sales for the retailer.
For a month last fall, HOM and its largest bedding supplier pledged 10% of Spring Air bedding sales, splitting the donation to the United Way's September 11th Fund.
Nine-store, Top 100 HOM, owned and operated by Wayne and Rodney Johansen, ran television and newspaper ads telling consumers they could "Help America Rest Assured." One newspaper ad said, "Find a better night's sleep with a Spring Air Mattress from HOM, and help those affected by the recent events sleep better, too!"
Employees decorated all the stores with red, white and blue banners and balloons and steered consumers shopping for bedding to the Spring Air merchandise.
The promotion turned into one of the biggest ever charity-tied events for the retailer, leading to $440,000 in Spring Air bedding sales — Home's biggest month with any single mattress vendor, said Tim Sommer, mattress department coordinator, who created the promotion with the help of HOM's marketing staff.
"We saw this an opportunity to get out of our local area and affect things on a bigger scale." Sommer said. "It was just a terrific promotion. The ownership here, the people at Spring Air and all of my sleep specialists were thrilled to be able to so something like this."
