La-Z-Boy Canada set to add 7 stores
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, March 3, 2002
WATERLOO , Ontario — La-Z-Boy Canada is set to add at least seven freestanding, dealer-owned stores this year, bringing the total to 21.
Mark Wiltshire, vice president of sales and marketing, said all will be based on the "Store of Tomorrow" concept introduced last year by La-Z-Boy Canada's Monroe, Mich.-based parent company. Each will have between 15,000 and 17,500 square feet of selling space.
The company will add second La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries units in three markets — Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Stores will be built in Kelowna, British Columbia, and in three as-yet-undisclosed locations throughout eastern Canada, Wiltshire said.
Looking beyond 2002, he said growth likely will come from Canada's smaller cities, such as Halifax, Nova Scotia, and St. John's, Newfoundland. "We're finding that the smaller centers are performing very well for us," he said. "They might very well give us the ability to build more than 40 stores."
Wiltshire noted that La-Z-Boy also is looking to grow its in-store gallery program. By the end of 2002, he expects to have 80 galleries in operation.
La-Z-Boy's other major distribution channels in Canada include department stores such as Sears Canada and major chains such as The Brick. The latter owns the La-Z-Boy license for the Greater Toronto Area, where it now operates two dedicated stores. The Brick is expected to build between six and eight La-Z-Boy stores over the next few years, and perhaps one or two this year.
