CHARLESTOWN, W.Va. — Rent-to-own merchant Rent-A-Center has settled a class action lawsuit and has agreed to make refunds to thousands of West Virginia residents, according to an Associated Press story.
The suit had accused the company of violating state consumer protection law by charging higher prices than the law allows. Rent-A-Center denied the allegations and said it didn't act illegally.
More than 61,000 customers have been notified, attorneys said. The company will refund a percentage of the amounts paid by customers who submit paperwork to a third-party administrator, the AP said.
