LeatherTrend: Mexican model
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 3, 2002
Nearly a decade before DeCoro's entrée into China, LeatherTrend, similarly, made its way into Mexico.
There, the San Diego-based owners, British-born brothers Noel Robinson and Peter Robinson, have also capitalized on a less costly yet plentiful labor pool.
The Mexican address also proved appealing because the government allows foreign-owned manufacturers to import raw materials, components and machinery duty-free and to ship the finished products to the United States.
The company, which is eyeing sales of more than $200 million over the next few years, has maintained a competitive edge in pricing, delivery and design, according to Peter Robinson, group president of parent Robinson and Robinson.
Chief Executive Officer Noel Robinson called the company's success the cumulative result of combining British, American and Mexican management with Mexican labor and British and Italian designers.
This leather specialty company now remains bent on building brand recognition for custom-order house LeatherTrend, as well as its promotional division LeatherMart.
