Youth sports lots of solid wood

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, January 27, 2002

Solid-wood groups turned up in greater numbers in youth furniture showrooms at the winter market here.

Some of the attributes of solid-wood construction have a particular appeal for parents, exhibitors said.

"We're thick, safe, heavy," said Bob Woodyard, president of Bedtime, an importer of solid oak and birch youth groups. He said Bedtime serves most of the Top 100 furniture stores that sell youth, and that based on youth's popularity, the company also is moving into the adult bedroom category.

Among other producers, Tradewins has found its niche in youth furniture made of solid alder and quarter-sawn white Virginia oak.

Brownwood Furniture introduced two domestic beds and two case goods groups, all made of solid pine, said President Rick Vartanian.

Ashley, meanwhile, had a new youth group based on its best-selling adult line, Bittersweet. The case pieces have a rustic pine finish, antique brass hardware and side roller glides on the drawers. The twin bed is metal in a sleigh shape. Rob Hoffman, president of Ashley case goods, said the company will be developing more youth lines from master bedrooms in the future. Coming at the April High Point market is an all-wood youth group.

Sandberg brought out a new youth line in ash. American Treasures is in a transitional style with a Butterscotch finish. Ash has a wood grain similar to oak, said President John Sandberg, but the finish is more subdued.

Sandberg has found success staying away from bright colors and fads, he added. Most parents don't want to get too trendy and some are afraid of making a fashion mistake, he said, while others fear the child will outgrow the collection before they've gotten their money's worth.

Ashley added a youth version of Bittersweet, its top-selling adult bedroom collection. Case pieces have a rustic pine finish, while the metal bed has a sleigh shape.
Canwood added a full mate's bed to its Erica youth line, based on the success of the twin bed. With two bottom drawers, the solid-wood bed retails for $499.
