Gold Bond taps two veterans for VP positions
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, January 27, 2002
HARTFORD, Conn. — Gold Bond Mattress, one of the nation's oldest and largest independent mattress makers and a major producer of futons, has added two bedding industry veterans to its management.
Andrew Freedman was named vice president of sales and marketing for mattress and futon products, a newly created position. Dennis Ferry was named vice president of manufacturing for the 102-year-old mattress maker. He succeeds Pedro Bravo, who recently retired after 40 years with Gold Bond.
Freedman, responsible for all sales and marketing duties, entered the bedding industry in 1984 as general manager of Webster Spring's South Carolina and Texas factories.
In 1990 he was named president of Serta of the Northeast and Silentnight U.S.A., the U.S. operating division of Great Britain's largest bedding company.
Freedman most recently was an independent sales representative in the Northeast for Park Place mattresses and furniture, and for Comfortaire air-supported sleep systems.
For Freedman, the appointment is a homecoming of sorts. "My grandfather started doing business with Gold Bond President Bob Naboicheck's grandfather back in the 1930s," he said. "We're both third-generation bedding people from family-owned factories, and long-time associates."
Ferry joined the bedding industry in 1983, working for Simmons, then King Koil.
In 1996, he was named director of product development for Maryland-based Mattress Discounters, where he remerchandised the company's private-label mattress line.
Freedman and Ferry both report to Naboicheck.
