Kathy Ireland, Shaw launch youth rug line
By Lissa Wyman -- Furniture Today, January 27, 2002
ATLANTA — Kathy Ireland unveiled juvenile rugs by Shaw at the rug market here, and is introducing this week at the Las Vegas Surfaces show a licensed line of ceramic tile flooring by Shaw Inds.
That will give Ireland, in partnership with Shaw, a full line of floor covering products.
"The Kathy Ireland collection (for adults) is Shaw Rugs' top line in sales, and also is one of the best-selling rug lines in the country," said Jeff Meadows, vice president of the Shaw Rugs division. Shaw Rugs and Kathy Ireland Worldwide teamed up two-and-a-half years ago for the line.
The Kathy Ireland Young Attitudes rug collections moves Shaw into the juvenile market.
"This is a consumer that has been under-served in all areas of home furnishings," said Ireland. "The rug colors are bright and the designs are cheerful, but it's not strictly a children's line. Many of the rugs will appeal to older teens and young adults as well. "
One group is machine woven of polypropylene and retails at $250 for a 5 by 8 size. The other group is printed on a tufted nylon base and retails at about $150 in a 5 by 8.
Ireland also is developing a broad line of wood and upholstered furniture through licensing agreements with Standard and Style-Line, and markets lamps through As You Like It.
"Standard will work closely with Style-Line and Shaw to develop mix-and-match products," Ireland said. She said she's also seeking a licensing partner in home textiles.
