3 Havertys promotions linked to distribution improvements

ATLANTA — Steve Burdette has been promoted to vice president of operations for Havertys in a move related to the retailer's work to improve the efficiency of its distribution system.
Also promoted to new posts at the Atlanta-based Top 100 store are Robert Kirchmeyer, named director of merchandising, and David Koehler, named general manager of the retailer's planned Washington, D.C., stores.
Havertys recently announced several changes in its distribution systems — including plans to open a 511,000-square-foot distribution center in Braselton, Ga., this year — designed in part to cut inventory and others costs and make it easier and more efficient to expand into outlying markets. The retailer wanted to add strength to the effort, and "that's why we brought Steve over," said Jenny Parker, vice president, secretary and treasurer for the 103-store chain.
Burdette, a 19-year veteran with Havertys, had been vice president of merchandising since 1994.
Kirchmeyer, reporting to Tony Wilkerson, most recently was assistant general manager and merchandise coordinator for the company's Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas stores. With Burdette's move into operations, Havertys decided to move Kirchmeyer into a merchandising role at the corporate offices, Parker said.
Koehler, an 18-year employee and most recently assistant vice president of store operations, is now charged with heading Havertys' newest market in northern Virginia and Washington.
The company will start with a three-store group formed around the nucleus of two recently acquired HomeLife Furniture stores, which are being converted to the Havertys format and should open in early fall. Havertys said it expects to open additional stores in the area over the next several years.
