Cut-rate airfares on tap for June

By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, January 20, 2002

TORONTO — Retailers will receive subsidized airfares to attend the Toronto International Home Furnishing Market this June.

Jean François Michaud, executive vice president of show sponsor the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Assn., said the program aims to increase attendance at the summer market, set for June 1-3 at the Toronto International Center of Commerce.

Airfare incentives were part of the old August furniture market run by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn., and also have been used by Furniture West for its Calgary, Alberta, market.

Michaud said a meeting of exhibitors, both those showing inside and outside the TICC, was held prior to last week's winter market, and participants agreed to fund the incentives.

"We need to attract retailers from both eastern and western Canada," Michaud said. "Manufacturers need a show at that time of year. From the response we've received over the last few days, we feel the June show will be strong."

Negotiations with the airlines will determine the incentive fares to be offered, and Michaud stressed they haven't been set yet. The QFMA also will promote the Toronto summer market to retailers in the northeastern United States.

For this year, at least, the QFMA will not change the name of the summer show, which is in the early states of development.

Among the outside showrooms expected to participate are those of Superstyle, Décor-Rest, La-Z-Boy Canada, Sklar-Peppler, T&J and Hamilton & Spill.
